Grading of Depression
Hamilton Depression Rating Scale HAM-D Clinician related scale to assess severity of depression illness. Consists of 17 parameters. Scoring is done by clinician for each parameter.
 | Score 2 assigned if a symptom is present. |
 | Score 1 assigned if symptom is trivial or doubtful. |
 | Score 0 assigned if symptom is absent. |
Some symptoms if present may be further categorized into:
 | 2 for mild; 3 for moderate; 4 for severe degree. |

Summation of scores for 17 parameters give total score ranging from zero( absence of symptoms)to74 ( maximum symptoms) -
HAM-D scale includes 4 additional parameters which are non contributory for assessment of severity but important for other purposes.
