Grading of Depression

 

 

 

 

                                         

     

 

 

 Hamilton Depression Rating Scale

 

 HAM-D

  1. Clinician related scale to assess severity of depression illness.

  2. Consists of 17 parameters.

  3. Scoring is done by clinician for each parameter.

Score 2 assigned if a symptom is present.

Score 1 assigned if symptom is trivial or doubtful.

Score 0 assigned if symptom is absent.

Some symptoms if present may be further categorized into:

2  for mild; 3 for moderate; 4 for severe degree.

  1. Summation of scores for 17 parameters give total score ranging from zero( absence of symptoms)to74 ( maximum symptoms)

  2. HAM-D scale includes 4 additional parameters which are non contributory for assessment of severity but important for other purposes.
