Symptoms vary from mild to pronounced, depending on the acuteness and severity of the attack. |
Mild
 | Bouts of noisy cough, diffuse wheezing, slight breathlessness, chest tightness. |
Moderate
 |
Marked wheezing; breathlessness at rest; increased rate of breathing; chest tightness; nostril flaring; dry cough; upright, forward leaning posture; prolonged expiration (process of breathing out air). |
Severe
 |
Decreased wheezing; severe breathlessness (dyspnea); chest retractions; nasal flaring; shallow, rapid respirations; anxiety; fatigue; inability to speak more than a few words before stopping for breath; upright posture; cyanosis (blueness of lips and tongue). |
